Kendrick, a starship captain and warrior, is forced to leave his home when his people lost the war. Fleeing across the galaxy and hoping that the enemy would not follow him, Kendrick chose a more primitive world - Earth, in 1600s feudal Japan to be exact. However, his arrival did not go unnoticed. Gogenko, a local lawman or better known as a Shukido, investigates and confronts the tall, strange interloper. Despite the tense situation, Kendrick is able to form friendships with the natives and even gets himself involved in their war against a local warlord. Yet another problem arises; his ship detects something entering the earth’s atmosphere and Kendrick fears that his old enemy has found him. Exile is a unique sci-fi tale combined with the ancient Japanese elements by R.L. Kiser.

Exciting - this is the most appropriate word to describe Exile. Author R.L. Kiser put a bit of everything in the story. Apart from the prime sci-fi adventure theme, there is romance between Kendrick and Doiyoko, the beautiful but unconventional eldest daughter of the Honashi Village leader. There is also a fairly healthy dose of humor packed into this story. I do appreciate the way it is written in two parts: Kendrick's first arrival and his developing relationship with his new friends in part one; how he copes with his new life years later in part two. I think this approach maintains the good pacing of the story. Simply put, Exile is a stellar work from Kiser, with appealing characters and an absorbing tale.
