Author Biography

WHO IS D.M. BARR?

By day, a mild-mannered salesperson, wife, mother, rescuer of senior shelter dogs, happily living just north of New York City. By night, an author of sex, suspense and satire.

My background includes stints in travel marketing, travel journalism, meeting planning, public relations and real estate. I was, for a long and happy time, an award-winning magazine writer and editor. Then kids happened. And I needed to actually make money. Now they're off doing whatever it is they do (of which I have no idea since they won't friend me on Facebook) and I can spend my spare time weaving tales of debauchery and whatever else tickles my fancy.

The main thing to remember about my work is that I am NOT one of my characters. For example, as a real estate broker, I've never played Bondage Bingo in one of my empty listings or offed one of my problem clients.

But that's not to say I haven't wanted to...

Unfortunately, the real estate business has previously cried wolf so when two agents are killed, the police are not in any hurry to investigate. Everyone is terrified but not as much as Dana Black. Even worse, she suffers from severe blackouts and as it just happens, she has no memory of where she was at the time leading to both murders. On top all this, Dana has big secrets and lives a double life. It is through the connections in her secret life that she reaches out for help in getting to the bottom of the murders. Secrets will be revealed in the process and her relationship with her estranged family will never be the same.

Expired Listings by D.M. Barr is a thrilling story that combines enthralling plot and detail, all delivered in flawless style. Right away, the story came to life with a gripping scene that had me feeling like I was watching a scene out of 'Criminal Minds', only better. D.M. Barr effortlessly captures the intensity of the moments and characters' emotions to draw you in and completely immerse you in the story, luring you to go with her on this engrossing journey filled with a mix of pain, pleasure, romance and darkness; and she blends all this together perfectly without allowing one part to overshadow another. Every time I thought I was close to figuring it all out, D.M. Barr threw in a fresh curve ball that made me question my theories, with a mother of all twists at end that made me realise how wrong I had been all along. D.M. Barr wrote an absolute winner that cuts across genres and delivers an amazing experience.

Expired Listings by D.M. Barr is a murder mystery. The realtors in Rock Canyon are dropping dead and nobody bats an eyelid, not even those that survive. After all, having the competition drop dead is good for business, right? Even the residents of Rock Canyon don’t seem to care; there were too many realtors anyway. Dana Black is the only person who seems to care. Dana is a realtor and she doesn’t have an alibi for any of the murders. Why? Because while the murders were happening she was playing Bondage Bingo with Dare, her somewhat sadistic lover. But was she? All the clues are pointing straight at her and now she has to clear her name before she becomes a victim. On top of that, Aidan Cummings, the detective in charge, has become interested in her and Dana has to decide whether to continue with her BDSM relationship or take a chance on real love.

Expired Listings by D.M. Barr was a really great read. It was a real mystery with a touch of satire and not a little bit of kinkiness about it. It was funny and not what I was expecting to read at all. The BDSM scenes are kept to a minimum, although some of the descriptions are a bit close to the mark. I would say that this should be read by adults only as there are frequent references to sex and eroticism. The plot was very clever, full of suspense, and leading you in directions you really don’t expect to go in. It had several layers to it, was very carefully and cleverly constructed, and it really drew me in. The characters were very well developed to the extent that by the end of the story you really knew them, whether you wanted to or not! All in all, a really good, fun read, but not for the faint-hearted!

Expired Listings by D.M. Barr is a masterful blend of a number of genres, exploring a serial murder investigation, kinky BDSM, and the intricacies that color the real estate industry. Realtors are getting killed in Rock Canyon, a phenomenon that seems to be just normal because the locals are used to it. But who is behind the killings? Who is taking the lives of realtors and why? Dana Black is the one person who seems to care and all the evidence could well lead back to her. She has a sadistic lover, Dare, a man who finds pleasure in kinky sex. When detective Aidan Cummings comes onto the scene, Dana’s life seems threatened in more ways because of her attraction to the handsome man. Without a good alibi for the murders, can getting closer to the detective make her more exposed or divert his attention from considering her as a likely suspect?

D.M. Barr is a master at weaving a mysterious tale around murder and sex and leaving readers exhilaratingly longing for more. Most readers will love the psychological depth of the story, the mind of a killer who considers eliminating realtors as a form of deactivating their licenses for good. The story starts with a form of a journal entry in which the killer narrates a moment with a victim in the Dungeon, who is being asked to recount and atone for past sins. From the moment that one opens the book, a lot starts happening, things that seem so well interconnected. I fell in love with the characters, the rawness of language at times, and the awesome writing. Note that this isn’t a book for those who aren’t used to sex scenes and raw talk. Expired Listings is a story that will entertain many people and explore what happens when the competition is stiff and professionals get desperate. Very brilliantly told mystery.

Expired Listings by D.M. Barr is a cross-genre story about realtors who are dying, and is mostly a murder mystery about Dana trying to figure out what is going on and put a stop to it. She is caught between two different love interests, one a sadistic BDSM character named Dare, and the other a completely average and boring detective named Aiden. She doesn't understand exactly what is happening, but all of the evidence seems to be piling up, and not in the way in which she expected. By the end of the book, Dana will have done quite a bit of soul searching to decide exactly what she wants to do next.

This book is full of humorous scenes and a lot of really interesting descriptions, including several about the BDSM-obsessed serial killer who is murdering all of these people, but the book never actually devolves into detailing out sex scenes or becoming too graphic. Instead, it sticks around in the realm of satire quite a bit and manages to remain entertaining and engaging without risking pushing a lot of audiences away by dipping into erotica. I saw very little of the story coming, and a few scenes caught me completely off-guard or made me cringe, but they never went too far to actually make me consider putting the book down. Expired Listings by D.M. Barr is a fun and raucous romp that will be a real winner with readers interested in a cross-genre work of fiction with a focus on the mysterious aspects. Great work!

Dana Black lives her life trying to compensate for the traumas of her childhood by engaging in BDSM play in Expired Listings by D.M. Barr. After witnessing the death of her father at her 6th birthday celebration and then being abandoned by her mother to live in poverty with her grandmother, Dana rises up and takes control of her life. A huge element of that control comes from open defiance of her Dom during their play times. Dana’s life begins to spiral out of control, though, as she experiences blackouts. Bad enough by themselves, some of these blackouts occur while fellow realtors from her office are murdered. Working with a handsome private detective who happens to know her secret, Dana tries to prove her innocence. This is complicated by her family relationships, as well as the hope of keeping her sex life a secret. When her sister receives a threat, will Dana have to come forward or will she be able to get to the bottom of the mystery without having to lay all her cards on the table?

Emotional trauma is the basis for this intriguing novel cleverly written by D.M. Barr. Expired Listings provides a satirical look at the cut-throat world of real estate mixed with stirring psychological insights into the world of BDSM players. Although not sexually graphic, some scenes of Dom/Sub play are intense, but serve to clearly illuminate the reality faced by Dana, the main character. Mystery is deeply embedded throughout Expired Listings and the unfolding of the crimes keeps the story moving steadily to a surprising ending. Humorous and deeply moving, this is a great story that has a lot to offer, even after turning the last page. Amazing story in its complexity and emotional depth.
