In Fat Chance, negotiations are underway to settle a large class action lawsuit between American Home Products, the manufacturer of the weight loss drug Fen-phen, and those who took the drug and either suffered heart damage from the product or were likely to develop future heart problems. The plaintiffs have placed their trust in their lawyer, Stan Chesley, unaware that Chesley has cut a side deal with the defendants that largely benefits him as opposed to his clients. Bill and Allen are two Kentucky lawyers who are champing at the bit for a lucrative case when they are offered the opportunity to pursue a class action against American Home Products brought by Kentucky residents who used the product. They rely on the clout of a local but renowned lawyer to sign up clients in the hopes of forcing an exorbitant settlement, their ethics discarded along with common sense, while ignorant of their roles as pawns in a convoluted scheme.

Fat Chance is a fact-based legal tragicomedy that explores the collusion and dirty dealings revolving around the litigation undertaken against American Home Products. This riveting story by Rick Christman presents a cast of characters who are a hodgepodge of amorality. The comedic element is illuminated through the inept antics of litigators Bill and Allen, two ambulance chasers who, when not getting tossed from the local gentleman’s club for rowdy behavior, are attempting to forestall their financial ruin. The conspiracy by Chesley and the Kentucky lawyers to bilk their clients is sinister, but as deftly shown by the author, their hubris is their undoing. This book has all the earmarks of a “Gang that Couldn’t Shoot Straight” type docudrama with more than a fair amount of humorous moments.
