Fee, Fi, Fo, Grow! The Real Magic of the Beans by Lois Wickstrom is the fourth book in the Science Folktale series. Jacqueline and her mother are in danger of losing their farm and have no money for seeds. So, her mother gives her a very important task. Jacqueline is to go to the market and sell their cow, Bessie. Her plans go awry when she meets a mysterious stranger that offers her a few beans in exchange for her cow. Once Jacqueline makes the deal, her mother isn’t as pleased as she thought she’d be so Jacqueline tosses the beans out the window ... only for them to grow overnight into the largest beanstalk she’d ever seen!
Lois Wickstrom blends the science of beans with a well-known fairytale for a dazzling retelling that will engage children and teach a love of science. Jacqueline makes a drastic decision to choose magical beans over trading for seeds, which leads to unexpected results for her and her mother. The story is a twist on the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, which follows a similar course of events as the original story but weaves a different outcome once Jacqueline goes up the beanstalk. Everything changes for her when the beanstalk grows high up in the sky and draws Jacqueline into an exciting adventure. The illustrations have soft colors and depict Jacqueline’s adventure with rich details and lovely images. Fee, Fi, Fo, Grow! The Real Magic of the Beans by Lois Wickstrom is a great read for children of all ages who will enjoy the story of Jacqueline and the easy science lesson woven throughout.
