Finding a Sport for Hector is a picture book by David ZM Allison. Nine-year-old Hector loved sports and wanted to play on a team, but he was clumsy with extra-long arms and knobby feet. He tried baseball, but when he threw a ball, it seemed to roll and stop. Hector didn’t make the basketball team either, because his shots missed the backboard. He felt dejected and awkward, but wouldn’t quit. Hector saw kids warming up for distance running and asked the coach if he could join the tryouts. The coach agreed, and Hector started running laps. It seemed that the more distance Hector ran, the less clumsy he became. He paced himself and became stronger as a result. Hector liked this new sport, and it didn't take much effort to outrun the others. He had a natural ability and talent that impressed the coach, who now wanted Hector to run on Race Day. Was Hector up for the challenge?

“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” What I admired about Hector is that he wasn’t a quitter, despite the obstacles he faced trying to find the right sport. He knew his weaknesses, but had the patience and determination to find a sport that showed the strength and skills he knew he possessed. David ZM Allison has written a terrific story in Finding a Sport for Hector. It will motivate children who may have similar problems to Hector. It will encourage them to think positively about themselves while learning to achieve the things they want, even if it takes a while. If you can spot the spilled paint can in this book, then you will know it’s a Clumsy Courage story by the author.
