The Ashes of Us by Ashley Baker is a compelling novel. Very early one morning, Dr. David McCall, a clinical and anatomical pathologist, receives a strange phone call. He is informed that his nineteen-year-old daughter, Addison McCall, is in the hospital. She was assaulted. He can't believe it. By whom? Seeing his daughter hurt, he begins to wish death upon the monster who brutally abused her. However, once his daughter regains strength, she asks him if he could kill the person who assaulted her and get away with it. Addison believes that once her abuser is dead, she will have the chance to heal, be free, and get closure. David knows that nothing will be the same again. Can he become a murderer for his daughter? Can vengeance fix Addison's life? Will revenge stop her from having nightmares or becoming more broken? Will their father-daughter bond improve, or will it become strained forever?

Riveting, unexpected, at times disturbing, and impossible to put down, this psychological suspense novel delivers a chilling exploration of how sexual assault affects the victim, what happens when one asks for vengeance, and when vengeance doesn't provide what was expected. The Ashes of Us is a one-of-a-kind story. It should be on every psychological thriller fan's must-read list this year. Ashley Baker does a masterful job of building dread around the father's plan to fulfill his daughter's unsettling wish, providing a thought-provoking, unforgettable ending to this novel. It features trauma, paternal love, a father-daughter relationship, choices that lead to unwanted and irreversible changes, losses and consequences, guilt, morally gray characters, the painful price of retribution, and more.
