Finding Jim by Rebecca J. Johnston is a darkly comic, globe-trotting adventure that follows two burned-out college professors on a wild quest to prove a theory most have long dismissed: that Jim Morrison is still alive. We’re with this dynamic duo after they’ve abruptly lost their jobs and commandeered a college credit card. They set off on an impulsive road trip through Florida, which soon spirals into an international odyssey. From the beaches of Key West to the streets of Europe and South Africa, their desperate and absurd pursuit reveals deeper truths about failure, freedom, and the search for meaning. Blending laugh-out-loud moments with poignant reflections, the novel is both a satirical look at academic burnout and a tribute to the restless spirit of rock and roll.

Author Rebecca J. Johnston has a keen flair for character, and her larger-than-life figures come across in full living color for a riotous and emotionally rich story packed with wit, irreverence, and heart. It’s a brilliant book from start to finish that had me smiling, even through some of the insightful, emotive life lessons, because they’re told with a twinkle in the author's eye. Johnston delivers sharp humor and deep pathos in equal measure, which gets the humanity of the situation across and the desperation of what burnout leads us to. It’s a suitably unusual premise and driving force, and that makes the attitude and narrative approach in the writing truly unique too. Some slow-building themes of self-discovery hit surprisingly hard later on down the line. There’s also plenty of laughs in the immediate plot, which is paced well to deliver both road trip absurdity and existential revelations that are sure to resonate with academics and the worldly-wise alike. Overall, Finding Jim is a highly recommended novel that’s perfect for readers who enjoy literary comedy with a rebellious streak.
