There is nothing quite so special as the loving relationship between a dog and his/her owner. Caring for a pet is a big responsibility, one that humans need to learn to do with care, dignity and respect. A dog cares for his/her owner unconditionally. While puppies, in their fear and their excitement at seeing new things, might hurt their master/mistress, they gradually learn to be there always, to love and cherish the relationship that they’re building together.
Candy was a dirty, disheveled puppy when she was rescued from a shelter by Sarah and brought to Summer Hill Farm. Once cleaned up, Candy had to learn to overcome her fears to become Sarah’s best friend ever. Candy had to learn how to be always “faithful, kind, loving and forgiving.” In return, Candy received the same from Sarah. Candy had to endure long separations from Sarah while the girl went to school. She had to endure being dressed up and carted around in a doll’s buggy that was a little too snug for comfort. But in the end, it was important to love Sarah to her fullest because, in return, Sarah loved her back.
Kelly Pedersen’s sweet picture book, Finding Love on Summer Hill, is a compassionate story about the sharing of love between a child and their dog. Children will be attracted to this heartwarming tale that opens their hearts to the unconditional love that owning a pet fully demonstrates. Owning a dog is a big responsibility, but for a dog, owning a child is just as important. And the rewards are endless.
