First, Last, and Always by Kim Lehman is a teenage love story. Charlotte Hubbard is an overweight high school freshman who wants to fall in love. She is a people pleaser and is considered a nerd, unlike her older popular sister named Alexa. One of Charlotte’s best friends is a guy named Miles Fiester, and they've known each other since elementary. He has a big kind heart, and has always been there for Charlotte through good and bad times. Miles has been secretly in love with Charlotte since third grade, but he is too shy to reveal his true feelings to her because he is scared of being rejected. Charlotte ends up being infatuated with a hot guy in her Algebra class, and this breaks Miles' heart. Lani is a hyper girl who hangs out with both Charlotte and Miles. She discovers Miles' true feelings for Charlotte, and then pushes him to reveal his love for her. When he does, Charlotte retreats, because an incident causes her to think that their friendship will be ruined if they form a relationship.
I really enjoyed reading First, Last, and Always by Kim Lehman. It was an easy read that contained a great love story. The teenage years are filled with trying to fit in and being cool, raging hormones, and experiencing dating for the first time. Finding true love is something that may seem hard to find, but we sometimes don’t realize that our true happiness is standing right in front of us. People are so scared of being rejected and having their hearts broken that they waste a lot of time with their true emotions bottled up inside of them.
