First Second Coming is a work of fiction in the fantasy, science fiction, adventure, and romance subgenres. It is intended for the general reading audience with some very mild adult references and was penned by author Jeff Pollak. Written as Book One of the New God Series, we find ourselves in a not too distant future where the God humanity thought they knew has retired, and a new specialist is now in charge, and intent on making some changes. A pair of media reporters find themselves charged with the task of covering a 60-day conference where humanity must put its case forward to the new God as to why they should not be made extinct.
Author Jeff Pollak has crafted an absolutely fascinating work of speculative fiction that blends real-life attitudes and ideas about religion with his totally original concept really well. Central protagonists Ram and Bren are a great foil for the action to revolve around as they grow from hapless, ordinary humans caught in the crossfire into dependable, wily figures who can overcome pretty much anything, provided that they have one another’s support. The romance element provided some great light relief against some of the more serious discussions in the novel, and I also found the dialogue wonderfully laced with wry humor and subtle asides that kept me smiling. As the conclusion looms, the different levels of the plot come together to form a highly intelligent and poignant conclusion. I would definitely recommend First Second Coming to readers seeking something original and thought-provoking for their next read.
