Imagine if every time you drove past a certain point where the light strobes were just right between the trees, you found yourself back in the previous day, able to restudy for a test or relive an event. Or change the future. In Flicker (The Flicker Effect Book 1) by Melanie Hooyenga, teen student Biz can do just that. Each ‘flicker’ into the past comes with a price – a mind-blowing migraine that happens just when she passes the time she flickered. But Biz considers it worth the price. She uses this ability to cheat on tests and relive making out with her new boyfriend Cam. But when young girls start getting kidnapped, in just the way Cam’s little sister disappeared, Biz realizes she is going to have to use her uncanny ability to stop the kidnappings, even if it costs her life.
Flicker (The Flicker Effect Book 1) by Melanie Hooyenga is a teen fantasy filled with just the right amount of teen romance, coupled with suspense as the kidnappings take center stage. The main character Biz is realistic, not letting any guy in near enough to learn her secret ability, always breaking a relationship off before the boy gets too close. She carried me along in her transformation from a self-indulgent teen heartbreaker to a self-sacrificing hero. The stakes were high, the drama was real, the settings were realistic and the characters were three-dimensional. There were multiple surprises along the way to keep me guessing, and the plot was gripping. I couldn’t put it down. Perfect for fans of teen fantasy with a little spice.
