Floo Flocky Doo to the Rescue! by David L. Gillespie begins at breakfast, when a hummingbird named Peanut appears and leads a girl named Floo outside. Floo discovers a baby squirrel on the ground and sees that its nest is out of reach. She places the squirrel in a shoe to keep it warm and names it Lucky Lou. As days pass, Lou stays with Floo. Mommy Doo announces a trip to the grocery store, and Floo brings Lou along. In the store, Floo looks for food for Lou while Mommy Doo shops for stew ingredients. A sneeze startles Lou, causing him to jump into a shopper’s wig and run through several aisles. Peanut follows from above while Floo pursues Lou. Lou is located hiding among fruit, and Floo retrieves him. Floo apologizes to Mommy Doo and returns home, where Lou rests safely.
Floo Flocky Doo to the Rescue! by David L. Gillespie is absolutely adorable! This is a gentle picture book built primarily around curiosity, responsibility, and everyday problem-solving. Floo is someone we really want to root for, and her cheerful exchanges and inquisitiveness invite young readers to think through decisions alongside her. My youngest reader just loved the illustrations by Ronnie Rooney, which are in a whimsical cartoon style. That said, it is the pastel color palette that she adored the most. As a parent who introduced this book into our nightly reading rotation, I genuinely appreciate calming colors at that time of the evening, and these are perfect. Gillespie's writing favors rhyme and repetition, supporting read-aloud pacing and participation. Overall, the story and the art create a book that, in perhaps the greatest compliment of all, was requested three nights in a row.
