Four Years Until Ever After by Don Cox is a contemporary romance that traces the complicated relationship between Julie Curry and Joshua Fisher. They were childhood friends whose closeness evolved as they discovered what it truly meant to grow up. It opens and closes through the narrator's eyes—a former college classmate who becomes the storyteller after reuniting with Julie and Joshua. They share the tale of their real love story after revealing that their “happily-ever-after” once published in a magazine was more fiction than fact. Most of the other chapters are told directly from Julie’s or Joshua’s viewpoint. Moments from their shared history, such as afternoons spent sketching buildings, designing strategy games, or when Julie asked Joshua to leave their home, serve as proof of the dedication that unites them or as the heartbreak that has torn them apart. Ultimately, one important question is answered: Can soulmates find their way back to each other?
The dog tags on the cover of Four Years Until Ever After by Don Cox first caught my attention. I wanted to know why they were there and what their meaning was. I thought it might be a military story, a romance, or a combination of both, and I was pleased to find that it balanced the emotional and realistic aspects of the bond between two people, which kept me turning the pages. I appreciated how believable Julie and Joshua were. Their connection wasn’t portrayed as flawless or easy, and it made me root for them even more. I liked how the multiple points of view allowed me to see things from the narrator’s as well as from Julie’s and Joshua’s perspectives, giving me a clearer understanding of their lives. It made the book feel more alive and drew me closer to the couple. This is a coming-of-age journey that holds onto hope, elevating it above the conventional romantic drama.
