Frances the Flamingo follows her flock on their way to the south. It's her first migration, and Frances loves it very much. The leader of the flock warns Frances to stay in the formation. Enchanted with the view, Frances doesn't notice the approaching storm and loses her flock. Caught in the storm, Frances looks for shelter and notices something pink below! After landing at a pond, Frances sees that she mistook ballerinas in pink tutus for flamingo birds. The girls take Frances to their ballet class. But when Frances sees her reflection in the big studio mirror, uncertainty strikes her. Will she regain enough confidence to enjoy the beautiful dance? Frances Flamingo: Prima Ballerina by Dottie Lee is a delightful read for 4-8-year-old children.

In Frances Flamingo: Prima Ballerina, Dottie Lee introduces young readers to the wonderful world of ballet. The author not only enriches the text with such interesting ballet terms as plié, bourree, passé, and sauté but also explains them to children and encourages young readers to try these moves and steps. The story of Frances is engaging and even dramatic. Frances gets lost because of her carelessness. Thus, her story is not only inspiring but also instructive. Frances is a lovable character. She is curious, open-hearted, and thirsty for adventures. Frances's character is relatable, as we can easily imagine ourselves in her place, especially when she stands uncertainly in front of the mirror. Dottie's humorous writing style and the expressive illustrations by the accomplished artist Pei Jen will appeal to young readers. I highly recommend this fascinating and motivational read!
