Christina Murphey’s Franny the Fearless Firefly was a fun filled book that focused on the letter “F.” Franny the firefly has no fears and often does dangerous tricks in spite of her father forbidding her to. One day, Franny’s disobedience gets her into a fix that she cannot escape. Will Franny ever learn her lesson?

I chose to read Franny the Fearless Firefly with my 5-year-old daughter. She loved this book. The illustrations are bright and very colorful. She loved that I got tongue-tied reading the story a few times. Murphey has done a fantastic job at featuring the letter “F” in this story. I like that Franny finally learns her lesson. Sometimes parents know what they are talking about. I also enjoyed that on the final pages of the book, Murphey added some neat firefly facts. I did not know that fireflies are actually beetles. Murphey also added a list of all the words using the letter “F” in the story.

The other thing I liked is that Franny was eventually freed. I want to teach my daughter that it is fun to catch fireflies, but you have to release them. I hate to see any kind of animal or insect killed because they are pretty. Overall, this book is fabulous. I would love to see Murphey write stories like this for all the letters in the alphabet. This is a great book for the pre-k and kindergarten children, when they are learning all about letters. I definitely will recommend this book to the teachers I know.
