Freedom Was Never the Plan by Vasyl Kazmirchuk follows Max, a university student who becomes convinced that debt and obligation quietly control most of people's choices, something he starts calling "the Plan." Determined to break free of it, he teams up with Jordan, who's buried under his mother's medical bills, and Maya, a bank teller sick of enforcing rules that grind down the very people she's supposed to help. Together, the three of them form a group they call "the Refusal" and start pulling off heists to claw back some control over their own lives. But the more successful they get, the deeper they're pulled into blackmail and operations that stretch across the globe. Max starts to wonder if they've really escaped anything at all or just built themselves a different kind of trap.
Freedom Was Never the Plan by Vasyl Kazmirchuk had me on edge from the first chapter, and it never once lets up. Vasyl writes about fear in a way that actually gets under your skin, and it makes every job these three pull off feel dangerous rather than slick. The characters stay with you just as much as the tension, though. Max, Jordan, and Maya each carry their choices differently, and watching Max's ambition turn cold and strategic while Jordan and Maya grow more horrified by the damage they're causing, leaning on each other to cope with it, is where the story hits hardest. The pacing moves well too, slowing right down to the grinding, everyday stress of financial survival before snapping into sharp, high-stakes sequences in places like Brussels and Dubai. Nothing here is romanticized. Every win costs these three something real, and by the end, that adds up to a payoff that's heavy in the best way. It's a smart, uncomfortable read, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes their suspense grounded and their characters paying real prices for what they take.
