From Mars and Beyond, to Eternity follows Dr. Paolo Catello Fienga as he reopens observations in planetary science. He begins with Giovanni Schiaparelli, whose nineteenth-century work on Mars became a lasting test of how scientists interpret limited evidence. Fienga then turns to NASA’s Pathfinder mission, using images from Sojourner to examine surface features whose appearance invites further study. Spirit rover photographs push that inquiry further as Fienga considers whether some formations could indicate biological activity. The investigation later reaches the Moon, where reports of Lunar Transient Phenomena present another set of events without agreed explanations. Throughout the book, Fienga argues that unanswered observations deserve continued scientific examination until stronger evidence can establish what produced them and whether life exists beyond Earth.
Dr. Paolo Catello Fienga’s From Mars and Beyond, to Eternity is brilliant. Fienga returns to old spacecraft photographs as digital tools bring new possibilities to material collected decades ago. The science is easy to understand, and the ideas I found (pardon the pun, totally alien) are mercifully explained in ordinary language. We are then given something concrete to picture, such as a bomb sag formed when volcanic debris sinks into soft ash. The image work is superb, and I appreciate the originality. Fienga's own methods test what photographs may show through color reconstruction based on atmospheric conditions, and through a Spirit comparison that checks a suspected anomaly by changing perspective. Fienga firmly roots everything in source material, with more than two decades of study that include over 350,000 NASA/JPL frames, alongside specialist interviews. Well-written and comprehensive, readers who enjoy astronomy with serious planetary science that's approachable will appreciate this book.
