In From Sexless Marriage to Sex Goddess: A Memoir, Alisa Kriegel, PhD, dared to do something she claims psychologists never do—she writes a tell-all about her sexual intimacies. Written as part of her journey toward self-understanding, her intimate revelations may serve others as a path toward sexual healing, not only women but men. Though the principles she discovers and embraces apply to both genders, the issues are probably more difficult for women. Dr. Kriegel lays it out for both in frank, no-holds-barred prose, often in actual text exchanges between herself and her possible hook-ups. She is determined to analyze her quest for happiness. The triumvirate of every individual’s identity, she says, is the intellectual realm, the spiritual, and the sexual; and sex is the most difficult to come to terms with. Just after college, she married and had a son. Then, her husband discovered he was gay. As they stay together for their child’s sake, she begins her sex-filled odyssey for self-understanding.

Her journey begins with her going online, posting a brief description of herself and of the type of man she is looking for. Her photo with “badass hair” draws a lot of responses. In her memoir, she presents a chronological array of meetups in the pubs and at the piers of southern Manhattan during which she analyzes her attractions and revulsions with dating partners. I marveled at her frankness about these sexual experiments and at her insightful discoveries of her deepest needs. Her openness to the reader is instructive, even enlightening, and moves also to her non-sexual self in hula-hooping, yoga, horseback riding, bungee jumping, as well as parenting her son. But mainly she delves without inhibition into encounters with sexual partners, examines what she likes and doesn’t, and most importantly, what she needs to be fulfilled. From Sexless Marriage to Sex Goddess by Alisa Kriegel is a frank, entertaining, open guide to sexual self-understanding. She deserves high praise for her courage in writing it.
