From The Book of Dreams: A Collection of Poems (The Passion & Reason Poetry Series) has many emotions, locations, and imagery. I love Joe Giampaolo’s free-verse writing technique. Each poem tells its own story and is written in a way that allows your imagination, thoughts, and memories to flow. For example, one of my favorite poems is My Hands. Hands are something I have always taken for granted. Joe made me think about my hands as well as my friends and family. Hiraeth is not a word I was familiar with. It turns out that there is no direct English translation; however, Joe writes from his heart in this poem. I could vividly imagine his memory and his emotions. After I looked up hireath on Google, I could understand why he titled this poem Hireath. Japanese poems were also new to me. My favorite Japanese poem is A State of Grace.

I have never considered poetry a page-turner; however, From The Book of Dreams is a fabulous collection I enjoyed so much that I could not put it down. After I read a poem, I would reflect on it, then I just had to see what his next poem would be about. Even if you have never read poetry before, I highly recommend this collection of poems. Each of Joe Giampaolo’s poems is short and thought-provoking. This poetry can be read one poem at a time or all at once. I found it a great book to escape from life's chaos and enjoy some poetry.
