From the Magical Mind of Mindy Munson is a wonderful story written by Nikki Bennett. The Munson kids went to live with Aunt Julie when their parents died. They have problems adjusting to their tragic loss, and their aunt isn’t cool anymore. Aunt Julie buys a new house and the kids discover it’s haunted. Mindy, who hasn’t spoken since her parents died, sees strange creatures living there. The Thing lives in the basement, Goony Bird occupies the mulberry tree, and other creatures hang around. The siblings are scared and want them gone. Mindy’s big sister, Susie, decides to find out more about the creatures. She asks their babysitter, Mrs. Wemberley, questions about the previous homeowners. Their problems increase when they start at the new school and Aunt Julie gets a new tenant named Adam.
This interesting book written by Nikki Bennett is also one I find bittersweet to read. It shows a family grieving for their loved ones, and how the loss affects each of them. The Mundys try to cope with this sad situation in a very realistic way. The siblings’ moods, especially Susie’s, were nicely portrayed. On the other hand, I was amused reading about the haunted house and its unwanted occupants. Nikki Bennett has the knack for writing creatively and includes memories from her childhood. She knows how to connect to her young audience as this very original story shows. From the Magical Mind of Mindy Munson is sure to be a favourite among preteens.
