It is 1941. World War II rages on, and its effects ripple through America. In Seward, Alaska, seventeen-year-old Josh Spark could tell business was bad on his Uncle Harry’s farm, where he worked. Following his uncle’s advice to get a job and avoid getting drafted, Josh joins railroad workers as a 'gandy dancer,' or railroad worker. However, a serial killer is on the loose in Seward. He preys on lonely women, raping and butchering them, and has already murdered four. He remains elusive to the authorities, and the more time goes by, the more gruesome murders are reported. Unknown to Josh, the killer lurks closer than he thinks. As Josh marries and enjoys a successful career on the railroads, he has no idea the killer is after something dear to him. Will the killer be nabbed before he destroys Josh? Find out in Gandy Dancer by Doc Richter.

If you are looking for a mystery murder novel flavored with history, drama, and suspense, Gandy Dancer by Doc Richter is an enthralling pick. Right from the start, Richter wastes no time introducing readers to the cast and plunging them into the mystery. The prose is gritty and intimate, and moves at a deliberate pace. The vivid imagery transported me back to 1940s Alaska. I got a clear picture of the social and economic circumstances the people of that era faced. I was shocked by the hazardous conditions in which railroad employees worked. From the serial killer’s backstory and the atrocities he subjects his victims to, Richter exposes the motivations and tactics of murderous psychopaths. In this whodunnit, Richter weaves a tale that blends a hunt for a serial killer with passionate romance, tragedy, and satisfying retribution.
