To her colleagues, Corey Hamilton, an honest police officer, has a heart like an angel. Author Stacy Eaton’s Garda: Welcome to the Realm is a unique story where the main protagonist falls in love with her fellow police officer Mitchell O’Reilly. The problem is that the guy is a married man with a child. Corey’s greatest secret is known to Brock, one of the guards of peace, who comes from Garda Síochána, a place that lies between heaven and earth. He is Corey’s personal Garda and is tasked to train Corey, after her death, for her future but her past continues to haunt her. Will Corey be able to tread the right path this time?
This is the first time I have read Stacy Eaton and Garda is the first novel of her Guardian Angel series. This book can stand on its own without reading the other books in the said series. Although incorporating angels in the everyday lives of ordinary people is not a new idea, the author manages to create something unique in her story that truly intrigues me.
First and foremost, the imaginary place between heaven and earth, the realm called Garda Síochána, is quite fascinating, and especially the Guardians who live there and their purpose on earth. There is clearly a touch of fantasy in this novel but it does not make the story less interesting for those who are not big on fantasy novels. This is because Eaton’s ability to tell her story is so totally convincing that it feels very realistic. How the author weaves the lives of her three main characters –- Corey, Mitchell and Brock –- without sounding contrived should also be commended. Garda will definitely surprise readers who love fantasy novels involving angels and stories with unexpected twists and turns.
