Garden Surprise: A Counting Book by Yona O. Masade is a wonderful children’s book bursting with verdant green and other rich colors and a child’s enthusiasm for some of the mouthwatering fruits and vegetables that a garden can offer. With his mother and father, our young boy is caught up in the fun and tastiness of harvest day. His delight is our delight as he samples from the rich bounty of the garden that he and his family have so lovingly planted and tended. The book is illustrated by Yevheniia Melnyk, and what inviting and tasty-looking illustrations there are. I encourage you to spend some time with each page and be drawn right into all the activity. I will say that Yevheniia has rendered the entire garden setting with lush green grass that makes you want to walk barefoot in it. I especially like the thickness of the leaves on the trees.
For me, the crowning beauty of this story is how this beautiful family works together in love, laughter, and harmony as they gather this harvest and share it together in a wonderful way later in the day. And I can’t overlook the delicious and educational ways in which Yona O. Masade’s Garden Surprise: A Counting Book will indeed teach your children how to count. Moreover, as your children are counting, they will also be able to see and learn about the various garden plots, trees, and vines where so many of Mother Nature’s fruits and vegetables are growing in their own unique habitat. Thank you, Yona Masade, for this story and for all its wonders and brightness and love.
