Gershwin’s Bess by Lisa K. Winkler follows the ascent of Anne Wiggins Brown, a gifted soprano moving from Baltimore to the intense, competitive music world of New York. Starting with her childhood performances for WWI soldiers, the narrative tracks her through the 1920s as she hits massive walls. She deals with her father’s disapproval of a music career and the blatant racism of the Peabody Institute. After moving toward Juilliard, she faces a failed marriage and the reality of being a Black artist in a segregated era. Everything changes when she meets George Gershwin, who is composing an opera with an all-Black cast. Anne doesn't just audition; she plays a meaningful role in creating Bess's character, while Gershwin writes the score. Will her steadfast demand for changing the character’s direction actually pay off on opening night?

Gershwin’s Bess by Lisa K. Winkler is a historical novel that will hold your attention from start to finish. It hits a solid stride once Anne moves into the career spotlight․ The plot flow is well-ordered, moving from local hurdles to the massive pressure of a Broadway debut․ The pacing moved quickly through her early education, which kept the momentum high before Anne's collaboration with Gershwin began. The character dynamics, particularly the mentorship she receives from her teachers, are depicted with authenticity. The conflict is centered on the racism of the era, which creates a constant level of tension throughout the book․ I didn't expect such a high level of detail regarding Anne's creative influence on Gershwin’s work, which was a welcome addition to the story․ Her interactions with Gershwin are the best parts, showing a woman who knows her worth even when the world is trying to keep her silent. Gershwin’s Bess is a great choice for anyone who enjoys seeing a bit of behind-the-scenes history mixed with a lot of heart.
