Gertie Goes to Foster Care, written and illustrated by Izzy Unger-Finn, follows a young girl named Gertie who talks about what it feels like to live in a foster home. She explains that it is a place where children stay with another family when they cannot live with their birth parents due to some circumstances. She makes it clear that the situation can feel confusing, and as a child, you may be scared, sad, confused, or even angry with questions about these changes. Gertie explains that it is not their fault, and these decisions are for their safety when their parents can't keep them safe or give them what they need right now. Young Gertie talks about social workers and foster parents and how they support the child during this difficult time while they get used to their new environment and situation.

Gertie Goes to Foster Care by Izzy Unger-Finn is a simple book for young children. The pace is slow, giving time for every new idea and point to be explained clearly. It has an emotional focus and handles the topic in a way that is relatable for kids who find themselves in such situations. The book has themes of reassurance, safety, and understanding. It also shows how love can exist even when families are apart. The idea of Gertie presented as a young child to explain this will help support the message. Children in such a situation who read this book will understand and trust the honest message. This is a unique book that will be comforting for children and those caring for them.
