Get Out Your Paper is a children's book written by Renee Hayes and illustrated by Rochelle Steder. Young student Garrett knows how he will be starting the school day, as it has become so repetitive. Get out your paper, write your name, and tell a story. Garrett starts sweating nervously and thinking about all of the things that he would rather be doing except writing a paper. Washing the dog, taking a shower, cleaning his room, sweeping the floor, taking out the trash, shoveling snow, or even brushing his teeth - any of it would be more exciting than picking up a pencil and writing a story. As frustrated as Garrett is, not a single story comes to mind. Finally, the class comes to an end and Garrett hands in his paper, hoping the teacher will not be too disappointed. Astonished, Garrett's teacher rates what he has written, making Garrett so proud.

Renee Hayes' story is well written and brought back memories of when I suffered stage fright as a child. Children sometimes doubt themselves when they pick up a pen. Fear of expressing himself, even just talking about the upcoming weekend or what to expect during the holidays, is something Garrett experienced. But with gentle encouragement and no pressure, children may not only surprise their teacher but also themselves with tales waiting to be written. With the assistance of the talented illustrations of Rochelle Steder, Get Out Your Paper tackles the nervousness some people feel, especially when they know that after they have written what they need to say, somebody else will read and judge it. I highly recommend Get Out Your Paper to be read by all children aged four and over and look forward to what Renee Hayes has in store for us next.
