It's Snowing in Sapporo Again Today is a Christmas romance by I.W. Berns. It's been ten long years since Jun Takahashi lost his mother in an unfortunate car accident. Growing up in the snow-covered city of Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido in Japan, Jun has a tough time navigating the winter season, especially during the Christmas holidays. His father, Kazuya, works in Tokyo, and their relationship is strained. But this Christmas, Kazuya visits Sapporo again with a bunch of snowplowing recruits to help the community. He strikes up an unexpected connection with a woman named Naoko, who sells postcards at the local Christmas market. Meanwhile, Jun meets Binh, a cheerful young woman who teaches him to fall in love with Christmas again. Will Jun listen to what his heart desires?

It's Snowing in Sapporo Again Today is a heartwarming story that celebrates the Christmas spirit and shows how it brings people together with hope. Filled with romance, humor, and heart, I.W. Berns's story keeps you engaged all the way until the end and leaves you with a smile on your face. It's an uplifting tale that is bound to lift your spirits and brighten your day. I loved the characters in this book. Not only are they likable, but also very relatable. Jun's childhood trauma makes him a very sympathetic character. His complicated relationship with his father is one of the main plot points in the novel. I also thoroughly enjoyed every scene where Jun and Binh were together. If you're looking for something to cheer you up, definitely grab a copy of this book.

This is such a touching story. I fell in love with the characters, and the scenes and settings really came to life, especially if you've ever been to Japan, or Sapporo in particular. A story of love winning over hurt and guilt, It's Snowing in Sapporo Again Today is very much so a holiday romance, but so much more!

This was such a beautiful story and it was so comforting to read about Sapporo, and the beauty of Japanese culture. I hold this story in my heart as Sapporo was my home for 2 years. It’s truly a magical place, and I was so blessed to know the author as a pastor and a dear friend. This book encapsulates the complexities of life and the beauty of healing from tragedy.

Usually, I rush to finish reading a book, but this was the first one that made me enjoy taking my time, as if I were sharing moments with the main characters. I loved how detailed and vivid the descriptions of places in Sapporo and of the people were. It took me back to the time I lived in that beautiful city and reminded me of the people I met and the situations I experienced in Japan. The story is simple in the best way, yet profound, because it is so easy to relate to. I could feel the author’s deep love for and respect toward the city and its people. I absolutely loved it!

This book was an absolute emotional rollercoaster. I felt happy, sad, and genuinely excited for the characters as their story unfolded. Set in the snowy beauty of Sapporo, it explores grief, healing, and the quiet hope that Christmas can bring, especially when hearts have been closed for too long.

The characters feel real and deeply human, and the contrast between festive winter scenery and emotional struggle makes the moments of connection even more meaningful. With touches of romance, chosen family, and cultural detail, this story is both cozy and heartfelt. A touching read that reminds you of the true spirit of Christmas—love, forgiveness, and new beginnings.

Found Family Cozy Winter Read
Set in the snowy city of Sapporo, Hokkaido this heart warming story unfolds. I loved the cast of characters and following their individual stories of growth and connection as well as how their stories intertwine together. Showing how Christmas can bring the most unlikely people together to share in the season. One of my favorite parts of the book were the actual locations in Sapporo featured. A definite cozy romance read, especially during the Christmas season.

“Sapporo itself becomes a character in this beautifully observed story of connection and becoming.”
I read It’s Snowing in Sapporo Again Today over the Christmas holidays, and it proved to be the perfect way to warm my heart while reflecting on more than 30 years as a fellow Canadian living in snowy Sapporo.

The story carried me back to my own early experiences in Japan: struggling to learn the language, falling in love, enduring heartbreak, navigating cross-cultural differences, searching for a sense of belonging, and coping with the loss of my parents and the physical distance from loved ones in my country of birth.

The novel’s location references, cultural nuances, and subtle introduction of Japanese terms are strikingly accurate, clearly shaped by the author’s keen observation and lived experience in Japan. Visitors, newcomers, and long-term residents alike, will find themselves learning and growing alongside the main characters, Jun and Binh, and longing to see their relationship deepen and evolve.

It is hard to believe this is I. W. Berns’s debut novel. She writes with the sensitivity and confidence of a seasoned author. I eagerly await the sequel and hope to see her dream of bringing this story to the screen become a reality.
