Robots, Please is an eclectic collection of loosely connected short stories by Jared M. Bentley. A newly created forestry robot unwittingly causes unrest among politicians, military strategists, and environmentalists alike, until it unexpectedly gets a promotion. After offering a ride to a hitchhiking andro sapien, a trucker bot discovers he may have to take an early retirement. On gameday, a young man runs into a couple of diehard fans of Michigan University's football team, one of them a fanatical fanbot. A disgraced former military general finds comfort in the words of a rusted barbot. On the verge of being rebooted, a sentient robot teaches a smallbot the ways of "fishing." A man grieving his recently deceased mother finds solace through a robot trying to end its life.

Author Jared M. Bentley covers a wide range of themes in these captivating narratives. Robots, Please is an engrossing collection for readers of dystopian fiction. These stories are set in a not-too-distant future where robots have become an indispensable part of civilization, entrenching themselves in every aspect of society. Bentley demonstrates how sentient androids might end up facing the same challenges and societal issues that humans have to navigate every single day of their lives. The robots felt surprisingly human to me. Their stories are bound to resonate with readers, primarily because their characters are so relatable. I also enjoyed the dry humor. To me, it was the perfect blend of absurdism and comedy. For short story lovers, this collection is a must-read.

While reading the book robots, please, I was taken in by the variety of occupations that the robots filled. I could feel the robots come to life, and enjoyed their reactions to various situations. It does give you a slight glance into what our futures may hold. A great collection of short stories.

A collection of well-crafted stories that shines a robot-gripped light on the absurdity of modern human life. You will have fun reading this book.

Despite being about robots, I found the parallels to the human experience fascinating. I never read a book that so accurately represents my distain for yoga teachers telling me to relax, while also making me reflect on finding my place in the world. Robots please is a heartfelt, humorous, and hilarious collection of stories for everyone, not just robot lovers.

Absurd, heartfelt, dark, and cute. A very enjoyable read!

An absolute great read that begs for more. An entire sci-fi timeline is developed through the course of sometimes heartwarming, sometimes terrifying, mostly hilarious short stories. “A Face Like That” is a particularly tantalizing coming-of-age tale with a twisted take. I look forward to vol. 2!

Also a must read for anyone who prefers 80s and 90s sci-fi vibes versus the clean, militaristic sci-fi that’s more prominent today.

It’s too bad this site ensures you’re not a robot before submitting a comment because I feel this book would be a hit in that community. But as a human I can say Jared doesn’t just do an apt job warning us of a future of metallic terrors, but reminds us they are our shiny, modular children. His stories about them reflect us beautifully, hilariously, capturing a foreboding but not too grim version of the future that feels modernly informed and retro inspired.
