Getting Ready for a Tornado by Fei Zheng-Ward is a children’s book that talks about tornadoes and how children can stay safe if one appears. It explains that tornadoes are spinning windstorms that look like funnels reaching down from the sky. Some tornadoes are thin like ropes. But others are actually wide and move very fast. The author also mentions when tornadoes are most likely to occur, like in the spring and early summer, and how they form when warm and cool air combine. After reading this book, kids will learn to identify the warning signs of a tornado, like dark green skies and strong winds. The book explores simple safety steps, like going to a basement, getting under furniture, or keeping a safety kit nearby. These tips will help kids feel prepared and less scared when a tornado occurs.
Getting Ready for a Tornado by Fei Zheng-Ward is a very valuable children’s picture book about tornado safety. I like Moch. Fajar Shobaru’s illustrations—they’re colorful and make storms less scary. The tips, like going under a table or making a safety kit, are simple enough for children to follow. I could even picture myself doing everything exactly as the author describes. The story is presented in a friendly way, which helps kids realize that tornadoes are something they can handle, not just something to fear. I also love the hints about noticing changes in the weather and asking adults for advice. Overall, it is a helpful, reassuring book that makes learning about tornadoes easy and even a little empowering. Very highly recommended.
