Ghost Music by Alice McVeigh will appeal to fans of literary fiction and drama novels with a paranormal twist. William Mellor is a cellist in the Royal Sinfonia, one of the London-based symphonic orchestras. William's wife, Margot, has learned about his affair with a violist named Isabel Bonner. William faces a moral dilemma and tries his best to forget Isabel. He buys a curious old cello at an auction. The instrument has an otherworldly sound, and soon mysterious incidents begin. A beautiful young cellist named Janice applies for a job in the orchestra. Pete Hegal, the Royal Sinfonia's manager, senses that something is off about her and worries for the orchestra's principal conductor, Leszek Zimetski, who is involved with Janice. William's investigation of the origin of his cello leads to frightening revelations.

In Ghost Music, Alice McVeigh studies the impact of dramatic and unusual circumstances on artistic souls. William's relationships with Margot and Isabel give us food for thought. Margot surprises us with her decisions while we explore the conflict between temptation and responsibility. The author often shifts our focus to the charming Leszek, whose past hides strange secrets and may hold the key to the events unfolding around the Royal Sinfonia. I liked the paranormal element of the novel. It is both chilling and heartbreaking. McVeigh artfully intertwines it with the orchestra's everyday activity. The author allows us a glimpse of the busy life of the orchestra that usually stays hidden from the public eye. The interactions between the characters drive the emotional thread of this fascinating novel. Readers without a musical background will enjoy it as well.
