Girl with the Silver Hair by Celia Seupel is a young adult sci-fi thriller set in a near-future America ravaged by climate change and authoritarian rule. We’re with sixteen-year-old Eten, who is a telekinetic trained by the military to be an assassin, though she longs to be a healer. Her life in a secret underground pod, under strict surveillance and controlled by pain-inducing implants, becomes unbearable when she's forced to teach her five-year-old sister to kill. Haunted by a prisoner’s mysterious claims and a growing distrust in her government handlers, Eten begins questioning the narrative she’s always been told. When she dares to rebel, she becomes the government’s most wanted fugitive, risking everything for freedom, truth, and the hope of a life beyond violence.

Author Celia Seupel is a writer totally in control of her story world, and this precise and confident prose makes for a gripping blend of dystopian thriller-action and emotional depth that has you constantly reading with your heartbeat in your ears. The blend of military and science fiction feels gritty and realistic, and Seupel’s attention to detail in atmosphere and description makes for a tense and immersive world that feels both futuristic and disturbingly plausible throughout. This is also cemented by Eten’s emotive narration and connection to events, and the sibling dynamics and harrowing emotional stakes ramp up that investment that we have in her future until you’re almost wanting to shut your eyes in case things go terribly wrong for her. Overall, Girl with the Silver Hair is a sharp, fast-paced, and thought-provoking read that I would not hesitate to recommend for YA readers everywhere.
