Lisa Y. Potocar’s Gold, Guts, and Glory, the third book in Glory: A Civil War Series, is a meticulously researched historical novel that balances adventure, romance, and social commentary. Set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, the story follows Jana Brady, a former soldier, spy, and nurse, as she navigates a complex mission that intertwines personal stakes with national significance. Jana and her fiancé, Keeley, are planning their future together, but their peaceful life is disrupted when the Pinkerton Detective Agency enlists them to recover stolen Union greenbacks. The mission, assigned by President Andrew Johnson, propels the couple into a dangerous pursuit that tests their love. Potocar’s use of historical figures, including suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, adds authenticity to the narrative, making it a thrilling read and a thought-provoking exploration of women’s rights during this pivotal time.

Lisa Y. Potocar excels in blending historical accuracy with compelling character development. Jana is a standout protagonist, embodying the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated post-war society. Keeley is well-drawn, offering a supportive yet conflicted counterpart to Jana’s ambitions. The historical backdrop is richly detailed, highlighting the period’s social and political complexities. While the romance between Jana and Keeley is central to the plot, it never overshadows the larger themes of equality, justice, and personal growth. Gold, Guts, and Glory is an exemplary addition to historical fiction, particularly for readers interested in the Civil War era, women’s suffrage, and women's role in shaping history. It should be in every secondary education classroom.
