Melinda Michael's Golden is an original, very well thought out and excellent mix of fantasy, fiction, romance, and young adult. Following the story of a girl named Hanna, everything changes for her when she decided to go home after she passed out in school. When she was saved by William Vann from a speeding truck, Hanna is instantly attracted to him, although her cousin Owen does not allow her to go anywhere near William. She learns that William is a newcomer to the town, and the two begin to develop a strong relationship/friendship. However, things become topsy turvy, and Hanna's life will never be the same.

While I do not read a lot of young adult novels because of the lack of originality in the market, I quite enjoyed this novel. The characters are believable and dynamic, paired with realistic dialogue and thought processes. However, William can be seen as a Mary Sue character; he seems to know everything, where Hanna is all of the time, and what to do in every situation.

Furthermore, the relationship between Hanna and William was well paced and developed. I could see a clear chemistry sparking between them, and the author made the spark brighter and brighter with every chapter/page. This is different from many other young adult novels in the market today, making readers see the difficulty of love especially at a young age, while satisfying their desires at the same time. The plot development is also impeccable, filled with twists and turns, having an extremely good climax and beginning. There is also a clear conflict, an extremely important aspect of every novel.

Step into the world where the descendants of fairy tales exist in Golden by Melinda Michaels. Hanna Loch is not your run-of-the-mill girl. She gets spells of blackouts. The blackouts first happened when she was 8 years old, and now she is eighteen years old and she blacked out in front of her classmates. The last time it happened, she lost all her memories. On the way home, she has this weird feeling that she is going to die. That suspicion is turned into reality when a truck comes at her at full speed. But the impact never happens. She is saved by a handsome stranger.

William, the man who saved her, told her everything that she forgot. Thanks to him, she is forced to believe things that she never thought possible. Living in a small town in Michigan, her life was centered and safe. But with the arrival of William and her latest blackout, everything she knew is about to change. Her life could be in danger, and only William can save her. Does Hanna get back her memories? Can she trust anyone, especially William?

Golden by Melinda Michaels is a story where fairy tale characters have descendants and they are living in the real world. Hanna is one of them. I will not tell you whose descendant she is and spoil the mystery for you. The novel was good and the suspense and the storyline were amazing. I was a little irked with Hanna at the beginning of the novel; she was all about being sorry for herself. But she got over herself soon enough and took charge. So, bonus points for her for that! I really enjoyed this novel. The story was good and the characters were well rounded.

In Golden by Melinda Michaels, for Hanna, life has always been a bit difficult to say the least. She lives with her grandparents while her parents travel the world, researching one animal or another, and to make matters worse she has blackouts. Well, she used to have them, she hadn't had one in over ten years until today. When she first had one, all she remembered was waking up from it with no memory of anything before the blackout; nothing, no matter how hard she tried! Now she is having them again, and her only friend, newcomer to town Owen Pierce, who just happens to be a police officer, is acting weird. And then there is the stranger in town, William Vann, who saved her life. She feels a strong connection to him somehow. The more she asks her grandparents about the time before the blackouts, the more they tell her to leave it alone, but Hanna feels a need to know ... because something is going on, but what? Author Melinda Michaels gives the reader a wonderful fantasy, coming of age tale to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Although Golden by Melinda Michaels is writing in the fantasy genre, it is definitely a coming of age story, one where Hanna must come to terms with her past and her future, and learn what is most important and right and to do that very thing. It is not always easy and it takes bravery and courage to do what needs to be done. Author Melinda Michaels gives you a strong main character that is tired of being an outcast for reasons she doesn't have a clue about. She just wants to be herself, whoever that may be. This is a wonderfully engaging tale for teens, young adults, and adults alike. I would even be willing to recommend it for middle school readers.
