Grand Cross is a work of fiction in the science fiction, action, and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by Merethe Walther. Written as the second book in the A Shot in the Dark series, this work follows on where Mercury in Retrograde left off. Once again we follow the exploits of central protagonist Aralyn Solari after her previous endeavors to outrun those who would throw her into the galaxy’s worst prison. Hunting down an elusive trader who has captured someone dear to her heart, Aralyn and her team once again find themselves wrapped up in a much harder operation than they’d bargained for, and working with people who they would usually want to avoid.

Author Merethe Walther has written a really captivating plot and a triumphant second novel which lifts the series and keeps the stakes raised higher and higher. One of the things which I particularly enjoyed about this story was the range and depth of its characters, taking the typical ragtag team approach and developing it into a set of fully realized people whom you could take to heart. Even the villainous Eladia is superbly drawn and realistically realized, and it’s this central core of believability that makes the science fiction and outer space aspects of the plot more compelling and easy to be involved with. Overall, I would highly recommend Grand Cross to those already involved in the A Shot in the Dark series, which is an accomplished and highly enjoyable work of science fiction.
