Grandmother’s Devil And Other Tempting Tales, written by Marty Malin and illustrated by Diane Slade, is a unique collection of short stories that focus on grandmothers. There are six short stories in this anthology: Grandmother Sits, Grandmother’s Predictions, Grandmother of God, Grandmother Naked, Grandmother’s Devil and Grand-mere Le Cigare. One of the most intriguing is perhaps Grandmother of God which is a biblical tale with a provocative take on the family of Jesus. Grandmother Sits is the most conventional, one that most readers would be able to relate to while Grand-mere Le Cigare is the most sophisticated. On the other hand, Grandmother’s Predictions borders on the mystical, and Grandmother Naked has a unique plot with a surprising twist. Grandmother’s Devil is a mystical tale about a comatose woman who drifts between life and death and, in the process, meets the devil with dire circumstances.
Marty Malin’s Grandmother’s Devil And Other Tempting Tales explores the lives of six grandmothers. In a world that puts too much value on youth, this is a refreshing anthology, and it should change the reader’s view on the elderly for, aside from Grandmother Sits, all the other stories are original and unconventional, sometimes odd but always highly interesting and compelling. Well structured, Marty Malin’s stories are easy to read but get ready for the unexpected twists and turns along the way. The characters are varied and well developed although they all fit the grandmother character in terms of age, and the inherent role of taking care of family. Reading this book has been a very enjoyable and exciting experience. Highly recommended!
