In AnneMarie Mazotti Gouveia's Hallows Realm, Roe, a young healer known as a Life Giver, is taken from Paradise Farm into Hallows Realm after Seth, a boy with travel magic, follows a secret plea for help. Hallows is being consumed by the Storm Catcher Curse, a spell linked to Ryah, a twelve-year-old girl whose storm power has fallen into the hands of Councilman Jinn, a ruler from Drifters Realm. The curse has already changed children from two farms into enemies: ghostlike Outsiders from Forsaken Farm and living trees from Forgotten Farm. When Roe’s friend Ori is bitten by a cursed spider, his body starts to change, too. With the half-moon battle nearing, Roe must find Ryah and learn why old magic has chosen her to stand in its path.

AnneMarie Mazotti Gouveia gives older middle-grade fantasy a fierce healer-led quest in Hallows Realm, book four in the Drifters Realm series. Gouveia makes the cursed realm Roe enters seem dangerous because each location changes what can happen. In the map room beneath the Wailing Ruins, paintings become doors while Outsiders close in from the hall. In Hopeless Hollows, Roe is trapped beneath spiderwebs that spiders keep repairing around her. The magic system is just as satisfying because Gifted Obligations shape how young people serve. Roe’s Life Giver medicine can mend Seth, the boy whose Navigator magic carries the group into Hallows, while Ryah’s Storm Catcher lightning becomes terrifying once Councilman Jinn, her father, uses it against frightened children. Gouveia gives Roe a healer’s bravery through all she does, in a genre that desperately needs more strong female leads. This is fantasy at its finest.
