Hammy's New Home by Melanie Lopata is a heart-warming picture book for young children. Hammy the pig loves life and more importantly his family and friends. He plays all day with the other animals but later at night, he feels sad and alone. Hammy sleeps separately from his friends, as they get to snuggle up on a rug in a warm house, whereas he sleeps outside in the cold. One day Hammy was feeling mischievous and walked up to the house, his friends let him in, and they slept soundly together on the rug Hammy dreamed of. Hammy sneaks into the house again and again, until he gets caught. How will Hammy's family react to his naughty behavior?
Hammy's New Home is a beautifully-written picture book that children will adore. The storyline of Hammy warms your heart from the very first page. It shows that no matter who you are, you should be treated the same, whether you're a pig, dog, or even a goat. Everyone should be equal. Learning this at a young age will help children be more accepting of others, which will ultimately make them better people in the long run. The illustrations by Chris Strange are charming and professional. I loved every word Melanie Lopata has written and I know others will too. If you are looking for the next bedtime story to read to your child, then look no further, this is the one for you. Congrats, Melanie, I wish you all the best.
