In Hamza Overcomes: The Story of Forgiveness by Rick Luth, heading to school in his brand-new uniform, Hamza sees a bully he knows from the previous year. He hopes the mean boy has changed his behavior, but it only seems to have worsened. The bully knocks Hamza down, tears his clothes, and takes his lunch. Every day seems to get worse. When Hamza returns home, his parents try to instill the word of God into their son. They tell him several important things about dealing with mean people, explaining that he must forgive the bully and be nice to him even when he is doing horrible things. Hamza is sure that turning the other cheek and being nice to the bully will not do anything but get him into even more fights. What is Hamza to do?
Hamza Overcomes by Rick Luth is an inspiring story that shows bullies' effects on their victims. The life lessons woven through this story are essential for any child to learn, such as leading by example, forgiving in the face of hate, turning the other cheek, and loving those who seem incapable of caring about others. The illustrations are beautiful and give perfect visuals of the story being told. I love how Luth incorporates God’s word and faith into the account so kids can quickly identify with and learn from it. I recommend Hamza Overcomes to young children.
