For Show and Tell at school, Billy decides that he wants to bring Harold, a big but cute monster, to show all his friends. Everyone is very hesitant toward Harold at first, and Billy’s teacher gives the monster a bunch of rules he must follow. Although Harold is a little bit clumsy and messes up sometimes, he ends up saving the day, and the class falls in love with him just like Billy did. Harold Goes To School by Philippa Rae is a sweet children’s book with a wonderful protagonist and great illustrations.
I’m always a sucker for picture books, and Harold Goes to School was a good one! The friendship between Billy and Harold at the beginning and end of the story was cute, and I loved that their bond was strong enough so that Billy was proud to take Harold to school, even if he was a bit scary to others at first. This book portrays the idea of not judging a book by its cover. Harold was seen as abnormal and different from everyone at Billy’s school, but they eventually saw how great he was. I would, however, be curious to know more about Harold. Where did he come from? Why was he living with Billy and the boy’s family? Finally, the illustrations and text were simple but still enjoyable, perfect for children on the younger side who are still in the early stages of growing their reading skills. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Harold Goes To School by Philippa Rae; it was a fun and quick children’s book with a heartwarming touch to it.
