Are you ready to learn about dwarf planets? Then Haumea's Big Day by K.J. Field is the book for you. Haumea is an egg-shaped dwarf planet with the shortest day of any planet in our solar system. Haumea and its moons, Namaka and Hi'iaka, have many things to fit into the few short hours of their day. After getting up, several chores are in order, like shining up Haumea's icy surface to cleaning up cosmic dust. There is also time for some fun. Haumea joins up with the other planets that sport rings and then plans an awesome party all before catching a few winks at the end of the day. Interspersed on every page is a banner that includes more information about Haumea.
Haumea's Big Day is an outstanding picture book that incorporates a fun rhyming story filled with information. K.J. Field has created the perfect blend of fun and humor while imparting solid facts about an unusual subject. As a retired librarian, it's very exciting to discover a picture book about something I've never seen written about before. The author is an expert in her field and has the skill to turn that knowledge into a stellar picture book. The illustrations are stunning and bright. They are filled with many amusing details like the space cake and cupcakes. I knew little about dwarf planets and learned a great deal just by reading this enchanting picture book. It's a rare book that captivates children and adults, but that is exactly what Field has done with Haumea's Big Day.
