Cobra Pose by the talented duo Susan Rogers and John Roosen is the second installment of the Yoga Mat Mysteries featuring Ric Peters and Elaina Williams. Ric is just back from his special mission in Indonesia, and Elaina calls on him for help. Elaina is worried about her father—she is unable to reach him, and the last message she received did not feel like her dad’s. Elaina’s father, a medical doctor, has cybersecurity as his hobby and is a known authority in the field. Elaina and Ric turn to Elaina’s uncle, a high-ranking special forces commander, who starts investigating instantly. What happened to Elaina’s father? Will Ric and Elena solve the mystery of his disappearance?
As ever with the Yoga Mat Mysteries, Cobra Pose riveted me instantly. The clues Ric and Elaina discovered kept me turning pages, and the suspense build-up was second to none. I also liked how Susan Rogers and John Roosen developed the highly topical theme of cybercrime. At the same time, the authors were generous with entertainment—the scenic vistas on the flight to the Broken Hills were breathtaking, and I liked how the authors made fun of the characters on occasion, especially in the roo burger accident! But what impressed me most was the depth of the characters; it is hard to create characters to love, but it is much harder to create characters to hate, and the authors excelled in both!
I was very impressed by the audiobook narration by Rupert Degas. This audiobook presented a special challenge to perform many female and male characters with a variety of accents, and Rupert excelled! It must have been particularly challenging to maintain the accent and speaking style of each character and switch the accents in a dialogue, but Rupert achieved it perfectly. I could tell the characters apart in the dialogues, and I even guessed who Mr. Lee was—solely from Rupert’s narration. I highly recommend this riveting audiobook to action thriller and crime fiction fans. Readers interested in cybersecurity may also enjoy it.
