A Cry for Vengeance by Ernesto Patino follows Bryan De Luca, a university professor investigating Karl Muller, a hospice patient who confessed to being Franz Dietrich, a former SS officer at Treblinka. With the support of Helen Darby, Bryan uncovers Muller’s secret past, including his postwar employment by U.S. Intelligence and ties to other Nazis sheltering in America. As Bryan digs deeper—interviewing survivors, Muller’s family, and ex-Nazis—he faces mounting threats from shadowy operatives who represent conflicting factions with their own agendas. Bryan struggles with whether to expose these hidden war criminals, balancing moral duty against personal danger. His investigation triggers violent reprisals, assassinations, and covert surveillance, placing him in the crosshairs of powerful enemies as he races to reveal the truth behind Nazi fugitives living in the U.S.
Ernesto Patino’s A Cry for Vengeance is a fictionalized look into the haunting aftermath of historical atrocities, as well as the continued efforts at the time to see justice delivered. Patino does well in giving a voice to the formerly voiceless, and also to those who, some unknowingly, had connections to the individuals involved. The writing style balances careful attention to detail with a larger plot, and his portrayal of characters, especially the Holocaust survivors, is handled with respectful sensitivity and clear-eyed honesty. The integration of multiple viewpoints, including those who are hunting Bryan as he hunts for stories, provides a wide scope and goes a long way in depicting how, and when, the rise in danger hits its crescendo. The ending is absolutely shocking, and I did not see it coming at all. There are many novels about the Holocaust, but Patino works within a unique aspect, and with tight pacing and suspenseful white noise in the background, this is a story worth reading.
