In this exciting children’s mystery, Haunted Hemlock: Mystery at Point Beach by Kate Jungwirth and Deborah Erdmann, the young ghostbuster detectives return to Point Beach where a series of baffling, frightening mysteries await them. Dominic’s grandpa, Bob, and his wife are looking to buy a cottage close to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Dominic and his friends tag along to view the cottages they have lined up. The lighthouse they are staying in, meanwhile, has its own chilling history, and some local people claim to have seen the vision of a ghost ship said to have disappeared in a storm. When the detectives meet the owner of the first property, she insists she saw her deceased relative outside her cabin, and learning that more ghost sightings and robberies have been reported in the town, they set out to solve the mysteries.
The story is told from Dominic’s viewpoint which will allow young readers to connect with the main character and enjoy his encounters from his perspective which was often humorous and entertaining. The other characters are skillfully developed and also fascinating. I loved that there are several intertwined mysteries and appreciated the unexpected revelations at the end. The children are involved in many thrilling escapades with ghost sightings that keep coming up and cases of theft to add tension. Kate Jungwirth and Deborah Erdmann have created another captivating addition to this wonderful mystery series. Haunted Hemlock is an enthralling tale that includes interesting characters and hair-raising mysteries that children will love.
