Patrice McLaurin loves inventions. She has collected stories about inventions and inventors and assembled them into his book, Have You Thanked a Kidventor Today? Some of the inventions she features are the television, trampolines, the toy dump truck, the popsicle, and earmuffs. The illustrations by Dian Wang show kids at work developing their inventions. Clearly both the author and artist hope these stories and drawings will inspire more children to invent solutions to problems or make our lives more fun. Some of the inventors had help from teachers and parents. Others did research in books and magazines. They all had dreams and worked to make them happen.

Some of the inventors in Patrice McLaurin’s Have You Thanked a Kidventor Today? left clear records of where they got their ideas, like Philo Farnsworth’s reading about electrons that led to his invention of the television. Others, like Frank Epperson, left a sweet drink with a stick in it outside on a freezing night and found a popsicle in the morning. George Nissen went to the circus and thought about what might make the circus more fun. Other inventors in this book aren’t inventors at all; they contributed to their communities by copying inventions they found in books. Even so, they improved the lives of those around them. All the stories in this book will inspire children to think about how they can make the world a better place. That is a worthwhile goal. Dian Wang’s illustrations will remind them that, in most cases, inventing is hard work and is often a group effort.
