Fourteen-year-old Amanda Jones lives with her mother, Patty, and her mother's boyfriend, Chad. She doesn't get along with the latter very well. Amanda often daydreams, finding herself in a fascinating Victorian house with many doors. When she finally opens one of them, she discovers a different world behind it. Just a glimpse into this world triggers her memories of stories about Terra-V and its marvels, which her late father, Gabe, used to tell little Amanda. But is Terra-V real, or is it just Amanda's imagination and longing for her father? Healers and Thieves by Susan Quilty, the first book in The Psychic Traveler Society series, will appeal to young adult fans of fantasy, science fiction, and adventure.

Susan Quilty's Healers and Thieves is an interesting blend of multiple genres. The author harmoniously integrates the elements of science fiction into fantasy. The philosophy behind the world-building adds another level of depth to the narrative without overloading it. Quilty's descriptions are vivid and evoke the whole spectrum of our senses necessary to grasp the beauty of Terra-V with its pulsating "tuntum" trees and feathered horse-like animals. That's how powerful and imaginative Quilty's prose is. While the world-building and the author's unusual approach toward travel between the worlds are unique, the themes of social injustice, compassion, and duty remind us of a timeless classic. Quilty creates a realistic main character in Amanda who is still very young and lacks self-confidence. Yet she understands and embraces her obligations toward the wonderful unknown world of Terra-V. The development of Amanda's character promises more thrilling adventures in the following books.
