Lynn Crandall’s Hear Me is the second book in the Dark Sides series, which continues the riveting saga of the Aeons, a group of beings endowed with extraordinary abilities fighting against the encroaching darkness that threatens the city of Auralia. The story follows Ainsley Durham, a psychic Aeon, as she navigates perilous dark forces led by Diane Butler, a former ally turned dark Aspect, and the sinister influence of the Irish mob. Keegan Barnes has a unique gift of hearing thoughts. But he does not believe that his gift is helpful in the fight against the darkness until he hears conversations from the dark side. They can help with the cause. He has lived a simple life and never opened up to anyone, but getting involved in the fight for the light will bring him even closer to Ainsley. Can he risk it? But can any Aeon face the destructive, consuming darkness?
Hear Me is a fantasy that gripped me. Set against the backdrop of urban decay and ancient lore, it explores a group that works tirelessly using psychic powers to thwart an enemy determined to destroy their world. I loved everything about this tale, from the immersive worldbuilding to the conflict that pits the group against Diane’s destructive powers, the characters, and the ingenious exploration of magic. The idea of Aeon was intriguing, and the deft characterization made the story even more enjoyable. Characters like Keegan Barnes are well-imagined and cleverly executed. Keegan’s evolution from an ordinary man to a committed member of those fighting the darkness is accomplished skillfully. Lynn Crandall’s prose is crisp, filled with sparkling dialogue and vivid descriptions. This story offers everything I want in a satisfying fantasy: memorable characters, excellent writing, and impeccable worldbuilding.
