In Stephanie Cotta’s Heartwrecked, young tinker Aaren Lockett has vanished into the hands of a scientist known only as Doc, whose interest in Aaren’s healing blood has turned captivity into a dangerous experiment. Three months later, Sasha Loren still refuses to believe the boy who saved her is gone. With her journalist father, Derk, she keeps searching Rexanberg for any trace of Aaren. The same search may lead her back to her twin brother, Sebastian, whose body vanished after his death two years earlier. Aaren, meanwhile, survives by retreating into dreams of Sasha as Doc begins using his blood for a larger operation. Sasha must follow the few clues left behind as the distance between them grows, knowing every lost day gives Doc another chance to disappear.
Stephanie Cotta’s Heartwrecked is an incredible steampunk fantasy, with Rexanberg conceived on a scale suited to the story. The characterization is absolute fire. Sasha’s artistic spirit is superb, shown when ink dumped across her drawing at Amherst Girls’ Academy becomes wilted roses as she refuses to surrender the work to humiliation. Neisha is a standout. Her skyracer disguise reaches right down to ordering black tea in a boyish voice at The Underground, giving her scenes a theatrical edge. The world building is superb, with Rexanberg’s class divisions built into how the city operates. The Berg Classic proves that beautifully, granting access to the Hoch Quarter through a skyrace that opens a doorway across social boundaries. And the settings! I was right in Setzer’s quarters crowded with alchemy books, then aboard the Zephryn, tearing through rifle-opened gates. Readers drawn to gothic steampunk with tender romance are in for a real treat. Very highly recommended.
