This book is set in Edinburgh Scotland during the mid eighteenth century.

Lady Majory Kerr has tried to control her family for years but learns that she does not have the power to control her sons or their wives. Like all families, the Kerr’s have secrets. Being married does not stop Donald Kerr from having an eye for the women. He seems incapable of remaining true to his marriage vows. Donald’s wife holds true to her mother’s pagan religion until she turns to the Christian faith of Lady Kerr.

The plot of this book has great depth. The author demonstrates love, forgiveness, betrayal and redemption. The plot parallels the Biblical story of Ruth and Naomi. This is the first book I’ve read by Liz Curtis Higgs. It will not be the last. She cleverly transports readers to the past. I quickly became enraptured in the story. This is a deeply moving novel and not a quick afternoon read; you`ll want to take your time and savor each word.
