Hide and Seek by Jo A. Hiestand follows a celebratory evening that turns grim when Detective Sergeant Jamie Kydd's promotion party includes a staged mystery game that unexpectedly reveals a real corpse. Shocked to recognize the deceased, Jamie calls on his friend, ex-detective Michael McLaren, to investigate. McLaren suspects that Jamie's police colleagues might overlook key details due to the victim's criminal past. As McLaren peels back layers of mystery, suspects, including the victim's old associates, prove elusive, each concealing truths that twist the investigation into a deadly game of hide and seek.

Author Jo A. Hiestand has created a masterfully crafted mystery that I couldn't stop listening to. Her talent for weaving vivid, atmospheric suspense pulls readers in from the first page, while her portrayal of layered, complex characters who feel authentic enhances the intrigue throughout the story. The masterful balance of dialogue and description keeps the pace both engaging and intense, leading readers through unexpected twists with expert precision. What particularly moved me was Hiestand's profound exploration of loyalty and justice, which adds significant depth to the novel beyond the typical mystery work. It made me think about the moral challenges faced by those who serve in law enforcement, thanks to the level of research and detail behind the characters.

The audiobook production stands out for its professional quality, with narrator Callum Hale bringing the story to vivid life. His expressive voice perfectly complements the suspenseful and dark atmosphere of Hiestand's story, while his character portrayals are compelling and distinct. The production quality is excellent, with clear audio that allows listeners to become fully absorbed in each twist and revelation of the investigation. Overall, Hide and Seek is a must-listen for mystery enthusiasts who appreciate a well-crafted story with psychological depth and expert narration.
