Traveling the world is bound to make the traveler aware of some of the world’s most memorable historic moments. In Kirk Ward Robinson’s Hiking Through History, the author takes readers on an epic journey through Scotland, Spain, France, and Italy, sharing fascinating details of the lives of two great warriors: Hannibal and Joan of Arc. Robinson is a born traveler, sharing his first experience of looking beyond the scope of his home at the tender age of four. He wanted to discover what lay beyond, and this spark has ignited his passion for both travel and history over the years. It didn’t hold him back as he trekked across Europe, following in the footsteps of these famous warriors, traveling by car, train, boat, and even hiking on foot. Each step was almost picture perfect in its rendition of the history he was following: “The morning light had gathered behind the mountains, casting the valley of the Guil into dreamy shadow.”

Kirk Ward Robinson’s book, Hiking Through History: Hannibal, Highlanders & Joan of Arc, is a poetic travel memoir and historical quest. The author tells a story with eloquence that lures the reader into the journey and the adventure. Descriptive narrative and dialogue are used to establish the settings and add personality to them. Photographs and maps tell their own story, placing the reader in the realm of the adventures being pursued. At the end of the book, there is a detailed section on sources, not just a listing of what the author perused, but a description of how he effectively used each source. Plus, he included a concise but brief biography of the key players in his historic journey. This is a fascinating, entertaining, and educational read.
